Current Student Email Logs 2025-2026

From: University Information and Technology

Dear OSU Community Members,

Oregon State University has been notified by Instructure, the vendor that operates Canvas, of a security incident affecting the platform. Instructure has not confirmed whether OSU was directly affected, and students and faculty should continue to use Canvas at this time.

Based on information provided by Instructure, unauthorized actors obtained data from its systems but no longer have access to those systems. According to the vendor, information that may have been involved at affected institutions includes names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and messages exchanged within Canvas. The vendor has stated that there is currently no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers, or financial information were involved. This assessment may change as the vendor's investigation continues.

This security incident may result in an increased risk of phishing attempts. Please be aware of unexpected messages claiming to come from OSU, and always verify the sender’s email address and link destinations. OSU will not request passwords, Social Security numbers, birth dates, or bank account information by email, text, or phone. At this time, be especially aware of messages that appear to be related to Canvas conversations between you and your instructor/students.

If you suspect an email to be a phish, report it using the “Report Message” function in Outlook. We appreciate the OSU community for its continued awareness and resilience against cyber threats.

Respectfully, David McMorries
Chief Information Security Officer, Office of Information Security

From: Office of Information Security

Dear OSU Community,

The Office of Information Security has observed a recent increase in phishing emails targeting members of the OSU community. These messages included alerts from the service desk claiming that accounts are being terminated, document sharing notifications and work study program offers.

The Office of Information Security would like to thank all of you who are reporting these suspicious emails. Reporting plays an important role in protecting the OSU community, institutional data and the university’s reputation.

The most effective way to report a suspicious email is by using the “Report a Message” feature in Microsoft Outlook. If you do not use Microsoft Outlook, you can forward suspected phishing emails to phishing@oregonstate.edu.

Phishing attempts are becoming increasingly sophisticated and harder to detect. Be aware that the OSU Service Desk, or any other legitimate OSU entity would never ask for a DUO code from you. Remaining vigilant protects not only your personal information but also the university.

Below is an example of a recent phishing message:

phishing email example appearing from Campus IT indicating a recent request to terminate your account

We recognize the challenges phishing attempts pose and appreciate your continued diligence in helping us maintain the security and resiliency of OSU’s digital environment.

Respectfully,

David

Dear Students,

As part of OSU's commitment to Prosperity Widely Shared, including our goal to ensure that every student we admit has a clear path to graduation, we are expanding how we support you throughout the academic year. During AI Week, I’m pleased to introduce Beaverly, a new SMS-based tool designed to connect you more quickly to the information and support you need to succeed.

During spring term, Beaverly will periodically send check-ins. These check-ins are designed to support your success, and they have been timed to offer important resources at key parts of the term, including moments when students often need additional guidance to stay on track. You can also reach out to Beaverly anytime to ask a question. Beaverly has been trained to answer common questions quickly or connect you to the people who can help. Beaverly is not a substitute for advisors, faculty, or staff. Its purpose is to connect you more quickly to the people and resources that can help you.

While Beaverly is a chatbot, there are many real humans behind this program. The OSU team will be reviewing conversations with Beaverly to help improve resource recommendations and outreach. This same team will also help connect important resources to students who express interest. If you’re interested in learning more about Beaverly, or find a way Beaverly can be improved, you can find more information at: https://academicaffairs.oregonstate.edu/office-undergraduate-education/initiatives/EdSights

With the rise of generative AI, you may have questions about accuracy or data use. Beaverly draws from a knowledge base curated by OSU professionals and is designed to prioritize accurate information and appropriate referrals. It does not train external AI models.

This is part of a broader effort across OSU to better support undergraduate students from their first term through graduation. I encourage you to engage with Beaverly when you hear from it and to continue reaching out to the many people across OSU who are here to support your success.

Wishing you an excellent spring term,

Roy Haggerty, Provost and Executive Vice President

OSU community members,

Voting is one of the most powerful ways we engage in our communities, state, and nation. With the 2026 Primary Election approaching, now is the time to make a plan to participate. Oregon’s vote-by-mail system makes it easy to exercise your right to vote. To vote in the May 19, 2026, election, you must register by Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

If you are not registered to vote, we encourage you to do so through the Oregon Secretary of State’s website.

If you are already registered to vote in Oregon, please take a moment to review your voter registration information through My Vote on the Secretary of State’s website.

It is essential to update your mailing address to where you will reside on May 19. In Oregon, having ballots mailed to your current mailing address is legal, even if that location differs from your residential voting address. Additionally, if you have changed your signature or party registration, you must update your voter registration information with the Secretary of State.

Ballots will start being mailed to voters on April 29th, 2026. To vote, mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day, May 19, 2026. You can also manually deliver your ballot to an official election drop box until 8:00 PM on election day.

If you are registered in a different state and reside in Oregon, you must apply for an absentee ballot through your home county or state’s elections office. It is not legal for anyone, including the post office, to forward your ballot.

More information for student voters is available here.

Please take the time to register to vote — and once registered, please participate in the election. If you have questions or need information about voter registration, please visit the appropriate elections office website:

From: Chancellor & Dean

OSU-Cascades students, faculty and staff,

Thank you so much for all your efforts to make our accreditation process and visit so successful.  If you didn’t see the report-out meeting on Friday, the visiting team leader, Bernadette Jungblut, commented on the great visit she had to OSU-Cascades on Tuesday.  The university received many commendations for good things we are doing, and two recommendations for things we should improve upon, both of which should be relatively easy to address.  Overall, it was a very good report for OSU and everyone should be proud of the good work we’re doing every day to advance Prosperity Widely Shared.

We particularly want to thank Beth Marino for being our accreditation leader throughout this process.  She coordinated with the Corvallis leaders, gathered the necessary information from many of you, and kept us all informed about what would be expected in the accreditation visit.

Finally, thanks to everyone who showed up for the meetings with Dr. Jungblut.  She said on more than one occasion that she had never seen so much participation in her 17 previous accreditation visits.

Best,

Becky Johnson, Interim Chancellor & Dean

From: Office of the President

Dear Oregon State University colleagues,

I want to provide a heartfelt thank you to the OSU community – especially the entire Academic Affairs team – for the tremendous effort everyone put into our reaccreditation process, which culminated in this week’s visit by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

The passion and commitment of the OSU community was so apparent throughout the entire visit, during which more than 600 employees and students participated in forums and conversations. OSU-Cascades pulled out all the stops and had phenomenal participation on Tuesday, providing a wonderful start to the visit, which happens only once every seven years.

Beyond the last few days, the reaccreditation process reflects OSU’s long-term investment in student learning and achievement. This commitment is demonstrated continuously in the form of amazing academic advising and outstanding teaching, as well as in annual program assessments.

This week’s visit marked an important opportunity for us all to embrace opportunities for continuous improvement while also celebrating who we are and how we serve Oregon.

Congratulations on a job well done!

Sincerely, Jayathi Y. M

Fri, 4/10/26
Fri, 4/10/26 : [Cascades] Drop-In personal support opportunities and resources for OSU Cascades Students

From: Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President

Dear OSU Community Members,

Today, I removed Sherman Bloomer from his role as Chancellor and Dean of OSU-Cascades as a result of new information gathered through an investigation led by OSU’s Office of Equal Opportunity and Access. That investigation, which is being conducted by an outside team and which began after a complaint to OSU’s Office of Audit Risk and Compliance on March 18, will continue. During such investigations, the university generally avoids commenting publicly to protect the integrity of the process and the privacy of impacted individuals.

OSU employees are accountable for upholding the highest standards of ethical conduct and complying with all applicable laws, regulations and policies. The university strongly encourages all reports of suspected wrongdoing, violations of university policy, or breaches of ethical conduct.

OSU’s Integrity and Accountability Hotline provides confidential and anonymous telephone and online systems for reporting suspected violations of law or university policy. Most OSU employees are also considered “Responsible Employees” and, except when exempted by the policy, have an obligation to report when they become aware of or have reason to believe that a violation of the university’s Sexual Misconduct and Discrimination, Discrimination and Discriminatory Harassment, or Retaliation policies may have occurred.

It is against Oregon State policy for anyone associated with OSU to retaliate against those who report suspected wrongdoing in good faith.

I ask for patience as investigators continue to work deliberately and expeditiously according to university policies. To preserve accuracy, thoroughness, and due process, investigations take time and typically include conducting interviews with relevant parties and witnesses and collecting available relevant evidence. The outcomes of such investigations may remain confidential due to privacy laws and concerns.

In addition to reporting options, OSU offers resources and support services to impacted students and employees. These include a broad range of student resources for emotional health and well-being. OSU employees and their dependents can access confidential mental health and well-being support through Lyra Mental Health Benefits. Lyra’s Care Navigator Team is available 24/7 via phone or live chat.

I am grateful to Dr. Becky Johnson who will continue to serve in an interim capacity as Chancellor and Dean of OSU-Cascades through this transition and to the excellent team at OSU-Cascades who continue to lead OSU’s mission in Central Oregon.

Sincerely,
Roy Haggerty, Provost and Executive Vice President

Dear Oregon State University Community Members,

With deep gratitude for his leadership and collaboration, I write to share that Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Barnes will retire effective Aug. 31. I am very pleased that Scott will continue to serve the university as a senior advisor for athletics through Aug. 31, 2027.

Since joining OSU in February 2017, Scott has been dedicated to Oregon State University, its athletics programs and OSU student-athletes. A national leader in intercollegiate athletics, Scott played a pivotal role in working with me to preserve and reimagine the new Pac-12 Conference. He represented the Pac-12 in implementing the landmark House settlement, which enables revenue sharing with student-athletes. Throughout his OSU service, he has championed the holistic development of the university’s 400-plus student-athletes across 17 sports programs, advancing pathways to success in competition, in academics and in life.

Throughout his career in collegiate athletics administration, Scott has been recognized as a leader in the industry. In 2014, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics honored him as an athletic director of the year recipient while at Utah State University. While at Utah State University, he chaired the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee for the 2014-15 season. While athletic director at Eastern Washington University, he was awarded a regional recognition by NACDA in 2005.

During his tenure at Oregon State, Scott oversaw a period of sustained growth and achievement across competition, student-athlete development, fundraising and capital projects, while also making head coach hires that helped shape the department’s success.

Under his leadership, OSU Athletics achieved notable competitive success, including OSU’s baseball national championship, our Elite Eight appearance by women’s basketball, an Elite Eight run by men’s basketball, our College Cup appearance by men’s soccer and our Women’s College World Series appearance by softball. In total, Oregon State teams earned 13 conference championships and 40 individual conference titles during his tenure. That success has been mirrored in the classroom, where student-athletes from all athletic programs have set department records for cumulative and term grade point averages.

I am also very grateful to Scott for his extensive fundraising success, which led to a number of athletics facilities upgrades for our Corvallis campus. These include the westside remodel of Reser Stadium, the Baseball Development Center, the Whyte Track and Field Center, the 20,000-square foot gymnastics practice facility and a new Field Sports Building to begin construction later this summer. Additionally, other projects included the remodel and expansion of Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, the Sports Performance Center (weight room), the Valley Football Center, the OSU Softball Complex (now Kelly Field) and Paul Lorenz Field, where men’s and women’s soccer is played.

Scott initiated the conversation regarding his retirement last August, and we worked collaboratively since that time to negotiate the best path forward. The launch of the new conference presented an optimal time to pursue a transition. We determined together that Scott’s continued counsel would be critical during the first year of our new conference and support the successful transition of new athletic department leadership.

I want to underscore that OSU’s commitment to athletics and the Pac-12 Conference is unwavering. For more than three years, Scott and I confronted challenges together and focused on prioritizing the holistic health and well-being of OSU student-athletes and their ability to continue to compete for championships.

OSU is committed to doing what is needed to win and to be successful in the new Pac-12 Conference. In addition to increased institutional support for OSU Athletics, we are seeing unprecedented support from donors and fans as we continue to pursue all means possible to raise money for athletics. As with every athletic department in the nation, OSU’s approach continues to evolve, and we will make bold moves based on data to support coaches and advance Oregon State’s athletics success.

Moving forward, the university will retain a search firm to conduct a national search for a new athletic director and will appoint members of a search committee in the coming weeks. We expect to name a new athletic director in the coming months.

Please join me in congratulating Scott on his retirement and thanking him for his continued support through this transition. He has been an extraordinary partner, advocate and champion of the university, its athletics programs and OSU student-athletes.

Go Beavs!

Dear Oregon State Community Members,

Deeply troubling revelations and allegations involving César Chávez have profoundly affected our community, especially survivors of sexual violence, as well as those who have long viewed Chávez as an important labor leader and a source of pride and inspiration.

Recognizing these impacts and in response to requests from community members, I am charging the university’s Architectural Naming Committee to begin an evaluation process to review the naming of the Centro Cultural César Chávez, one of the seven cultural resource centers on the Corvallis campus. Throughout this process, members of the OSU community will have opportunities to share their experiences and perspectives. Concerns raised about artwork connected to Chávez within the Centro and other locations on our campuses will also be considered as part of a broader review. More information will be provided on this process in the coming days.

The Centro Cultural César Chávez has played a vital role on the Corvallis campus for decades, serving as a hub of community and cultural connection for many students, staff and faculty. Part of what makes OSU so special is a shared commitment to creating a sense of home and belonging for everyone. It’s with that very commitment that we address current challenges and look to the future together.

Sincerely,
Jayathi Y. Murthy, President
