From: Office of the Dean of Students

Dear OSU Students,

Welcome to another exciting and busy academic year at Oregon State University! We are writing to share a reminder regarding religious holidays and observances and to confirm that the university is committed to providing support for students whose religious observance may have an impact on classes, schedules and dietary needs.

We request that faculty work with all undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of learning modality, as outlined in OSU’s Religious Accommodation of Students Policy. It is incumbent on the student making the request to notify their faculty member or supervisor as soon as possible prior to the need for accommodation, although we recognize that holidays closely aligned with the start of a term may make that difficult. Students should work directly with their faculty member on these requests, and we ask that faculty provide reasonable accommodations to allow for the completion of any missed course deliverables. Faculty and staff are able to approve requests for religious accommodations without consultation, but must first contact the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access before denying a request.

Below we provide information regarding dining and food options available on the Corvallis campus and at OSU-Cascades.

If you have any questions, concerns or recommendations, please do not hesitate to directly contact the Office of the Dean of Students or Office of Equal Opportunity and Access.

We wish you all a great start to fall term.

2024 Annual Security & Fire Safety Report; 2023 Update

Notice of Availability

The 2024 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes important safety information, a wide range of current security policies, fire safety practices, helpful university and local resources, crime prevention programs, and crime and fire statistics for 2023, 2022, and 2021. Oregon State University publishes this report in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. This report is available without charge.

Please click on the link below to immediately access a digital copy of the 2024 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report for the Corvallis Campus, OSU-Cascades, Hatfield Marine Science Center, OSU Portland Center, and OSU at Eastern Oregon University.

A paper copy of this report will be provided upon request and can also be obtained at the following locations:

  • Corvallis: 200 Cascade Hall, 601 SW 17th St.
  • Bend: 108 Obsidian Hall, 1500 SW Chandler Ave.
  • Newport: Director’s Office, 2030 SE Marine Science Dr.
  • Portland: 555 SW Morrison St., Suite 200
  • La Grande: 205 Badgley Hall, One University Blvd.
  • Email: clery.compliance@‌oregonstate.edu

The Clery Act also requires universities to redistribute annual security reports when crime statistics are revised. The 2022 crime statistics disclosed in the 2023 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report for the Corvallis campus have been updated and this report is being redistributed to ensure the campus community has the most up-to-date numbers. While reviewing university conduct records, it was discovered that the location of a 2022 crime report was mistakenly classified as off-campus when the incident occurred in an on-campus student housing facility on the Corvallis campus. After further review, 1 on-campus, 1 on-campus student housing facility fondling has been added to the 2022 crime statistics for the Corvallis campus. Here is a link to the updated report:

For more information about Clery Act compliance at Oregon State University, please visit https://clery.‌oregonstate.edu/.

From: Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs

Dear OSU Community,

We hope you had a restful summer and are looking forward to a successful academic year as we begin fall term.

As President Murthy shared at the end of the spring quarter, the university has planned a series of actions to respond to the crisis in Gaza, Israel and the region that are consistent with the university’s public mission and core values. You can review these actions, and how we plan to keep the OSU community informed of progress, on a new webpage.

As we begin the term, we are providing an additional opportunity for members of the OSU community to indicate interest in participating in these efforts by completing this form.

Please ensure you submit your interest by Thursday, October 3. We will follow up with those who express interest in participating with an invitation to provide information about expertise and specific interests to select task force and committee members.

For those who previously submitted the form and indicated interest, you do not need to submit this form again. We have noted your information and will follow up accordingly.

We look forward to continued conversations on these important topics and updating the university community on our progress.

Sincerely,

Dan Larson, Vice Provost for Student Affairs & Senior Advisor to the Provost for Operations

Safety reminders and resources for the new academic year

OSU Community Members,

Welcome to the new academic year. We are excited to see so much activity and energy on Oregon State University’s Corvallis campus.

The safety of the OSU community is a top priority of the university and the Department of Public Safety. At OSU, public safety is a shared responsibility, and we ask for your collaboration.

Students, faculty and staff can contribute to their own and others’ safety by being aware of their surroundings and reporting suspicious behavior or the presence of unusual or suspicious items.

The Department of Public Safety is always available to help and respond to your needs. For non-emergency help, please call 541-737-3010. If it’s an emergency, call 541-737-7000 or 911. You may also visit the Department of Public Safety website to learn more about the Department of Public Safety, and to find information about safety-related topics.

If you do report a matter of concern, please focus on describing the behavior when identifying the suspicious activity. Be prepared to describe “Who, what, when, where and why.” For example: Share who you saw. Also share who else saw the incident you are reporting. What did you see? When did you see it? Where did you see it? Why did it appear suspicious or unusual to you?

To help in reporting an item considered suspicious, evaluate if the item is hidden, obviously suspicious and something not typically seen or used within a location. If you see or discover a suspicious item, do not touch it, tamper with it, or move it. Call 911 and report the item immediately.

Here are some additional free resources to help you this year:

·         OSU Assist provides mobile crisis response for mental health matters and other forms of distress. OSU Assist can be reached via Public Safety at 541-737-3010.

·         Counseling and Psychological Services offers students mental health support.

·         ASOSU SafeRide is a service providing OSU students alternative transportation services around campus and within Corvallis and the surrounding area from 8:30PM-1AM.

·         Guardian App is a service that allows you to text with OSU Police Dispatch and has the ability to create a Virtual Escort from your contacts.

·         The Mental Health and Emotional Support Resources for Employees provides access to resources for OSU employees.

These and more resources can be found at the OSU Experience Student Resources webpage.

To contribute to your safety and awareness, please verify your mobile phone number to receive text messages from OSU Alert, the university’s text and email alert service that provides time-sensitive information. Students may verify their mobile phone number by logging in to Beaver Hub, https://beaverhub.oregonstate.edu/login, and under Resources clicking on 'View/Update Address and Phone'. OSU only sends emergency text messages when an incident needs your immediate response. Other than an annual test, we will not send routine messages via text.

Thank you for your help in contributing to safety within the OSU community.

Sincerely,

Shanon Anderson, Associate Vice President for Public Safety/Chief of Police
Stephen Jenkins, Ed.D., Associate Vice Provost & Acting Dean of Students

Welcome to the new academic year at Oregon State University!

As you embark on your journey of learning and discovery, I write to share values that shape the OSU community.

By choosing Oregon State, you have joined a community of doers, change-makers and dreamers. At OSU, we stay curious. Curiosity spurs intellectual growth, innovation and ingenuity. Curiosity helps us value and integrate diverse lived experiences, perspectives and viewpoints. And curiosity is essential to advancing knowledge, solving problems and making meaningful change.

Throughout your time at OSU, stay curious both inside and outside of the classroom. You will surely encounter viewpoints and ideas that challenge your perspectives and beliefs, and that will sometimes feel uncomfortable. Such moments of discomfort and dissonance are essential to your growth.

Oregon State commits to you that we will work every day to create an environment where you can productively engage and wrestle with diverse ideas and viewpoints.

To do this, we will together:

  • Acknowledge complexity and nuance in the questions and issues we explore, and resist oversimplification and generalization.
  • Respect the essential humanity and dignity of others, even when we disagree with them.
  • Seek out diverse sources of knowledge, experiences and perspectives and avoid echo-chambers where only limited viewpoints are allowed.
  • Be willing to re-assess and potentially modify our viewpoints based on new information.
  • Listen actively and empathetically to others, without interrupting, dominating or dismissing.
  • Support and encourage all to share their views and experiences, especially those who may feel marginalized or silenced.
  • Report any incidents of discrimination, harassment or violence that may violate university policies.

By embracing your curiosity, you will contribute to a learning community that is vibrant and productive. By maintaining an open mind, listening carefully and thinking critically, you will develop valuable skills and abilities that will serve you well beyond your time at OSU.

We recommend visiting the university’s new website on free expression where you can find information, resources and answers to questions on this topic.

We’re excited you are part of the OSU community, and we look forward to a great year ahead.

Go Beavs!

From: Office of the President

Dear OSU Community,

In the days following the dramatic events of August 4, 2023, I assured you that we were doing everything in our control to fight for the Pac-12. We explored countless paths, always mindful that preserving the grand history, excellence and tradition of the Pac-12 is in the best interests of OSU student-athletes and of intercollegiate athletics nationally. Beaver Nation never gave up on us, and we will never stop fighting for Beaver Nation.

Today, Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Barnes and I are proud to share that the Pac-12 has secured commitments from Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State to join our conference. These are universities that share our values, prioritizing the holistic health and wellbeing of student-athletes and providing opportunities for them to compete at the highest levels. While plans for 2026 and beyond are still taking shape, there is so much to look forward to.

As with any grand undertaking, there will be challenges. But today, bolstered by the grit, resiliency and fighting spirit of Beaver Nation, the Pac-12 is rising once again. Together, with all eyes upon us, we have inspired the nation. In this singular moment, we look to the future with boldness and creativity. By championing student-athletes, strong ties and cherished traditions among leading universities, we are charting our own path and setting an example for the future of all intercollegiate athletics.

Go Beavs!
