From: Office of the President

Dear OSU Community Members:

Today’s news that Stanford and Cal will join the ACC means that Pac-12 Conference membership will almost entirely turn over at the end of the 2023-2024 academic year. While not inevitable, this was one of several possible scenarios, and we are prepared for it. We will continue pursuing all opportunities within our control to preserve the Pac-12 or identify a new conference home for OSU Athletics. At the center of this effort is you – OSU’s student-athletes, students, faculty and staff, our community and fellow Oregonians, and OSU alumni, friends and fans around the world.

We are Beaver Nation, and I along with the Vice President & Director of Athletics Scott Barnes will continue to advocate vigorously, act purposefully, rally supporters – and speak out for you.

But we won’t be able to do this by ourselves. We need your help. Now is the time to recommit to Oregon State University and show your passion and spirit for all that we have to offer in athletics, academics, research and beyond.

We can start by acknowledging and celebrating OSU’s many strengths, starting with the people of Oregon State and Beaver Nation. We are fortunate to have the most talented and determined student-athletes, coaches and staff found in any conference in the nation. They choose to be here for a reason – because of our single-minded focus on the holistic development and success of students and student-athletes in their academic, athletic and life goals.

That isn’t going away.

For the last nine years, OSU has seen record demand. We now enroll more than 35,000 students, the most of any university in Oregon. Our faculty research spans vital fields of study with deep community impact – from climate science and clean energy to biotechnology and robotics. OSU’s research funding now approaches half a billion dollars and is growing by double-digit percentages each year. More than 200,000 OSU alumni in Oregon and beyond expand Beaver Nation’s reach throughout the world.

With so much to be proud of and so many supporters working hard on behalf of OSU, we can lead from a position of strength. We are the university that serves Oregonians statewide. We look forward to our future. We will not stop fighting to ensure that OSU student-athletes will continue to compete at the highest level of competition possible. We look forward to game days that will continue to bring fans to Corvallis from across the state and beyond to fill Reser Stadium with cheering fans, providing critical economic benefits to our local community.

And OSU will continue to advance our education, research and public engagement missions to serve the state, the nation and the world.

I know you have many questions, concerns and ideas. I invite you to join me, Vice President and Athletic Director Scott Barnes and ASOSU President Carissa O’Donnell on Sept. 5 at noon for a virtual town hall where we will answer questions from students and student-athletes about our path forward. The link to that town hall is https://beav.es/TXD, and further information is available on our athletic conference realignment website.

I am proud and grateful for everyone in Beaver Nation who are rallying in support of our university. We are actively pursuing all conversations that present a path forward for Oregon State University and will continue to provide you with updates.

Sincerely,

Jayathi Murthy, President

From: Student Account Services

Dear Students,

We write to announce important changes related to student billing beginning in Fall 2023.

Student Account Late Fee

What’s Changing

  • Starting September 1, 2023, OSU will no longer charge registered students the 1% monthly interest on unpaid balances. In its place, only those students who do not pay their account balance down to $500 or lower by the due date each term will be charged a flat $85 late fee.
  • Registered students who are enrolled in an OSU payment plan and current with their payments for the current term are exempt from the late fee.

This change is in coordination with ASOSU’s recommendation in resolution SR-82.07 which addressed the unique efforts some international students face with international banking. ASOSU recommended the university replace the existing 1% per month (12% APR) interest with a flat late fee charged once toward the end of the term.

The determining factors behind that resolution from ASOSU are compelling for all students. This alternative method of a flat late fee of $85 instead of monthly interest will reduce the number of students impacted, be more transparent and predictable, and still encourages students to manage their student account each term.

What’s Not Changing

  • Billing accounts for former students and non-students will still be charged 1% interest per month on unpaid balances.

Payment Plans

What’s Changed

  • There are now more student account payment plan options of varying lengths available each term.
  • A $15 enrollment fee is charged when a student signs up for a payment plan each term.

What’s Not Changing

  • Students who are enrolled and in good standing for a payment plan for the current term are exempt from the account balance registration hold process.

Dear Hawaiian OSU Students,

Earlier this month, the world woke up to the shocking devastation left behind by fires that ripped through Hawai’i, specifically Maui and Lahaina. Over 100 people lost their lives because of the Maui fires, and hundreds more are still missing. This unfortunate incident impacts many OSU community members. Some students, faculty and staff call Hawai’i home. Others have connection to Hawai’i through friends, family, or work relationships.

We are reaching out to you directly as OSU students from Hawai’i. We share in your pain because of the devastation taking place in your home. Our hope is that you have been able to communicate with your friends and loved ones and they are okay despite the challenging conditions.

Given your direct ties to Hawai’i, we are reaching out to provide care and support. Impacted OSU students may contact:

Additional student support resources may be found at https://experience.oregonstate.edu/.

In solidarity, we remember those lost and those forever impacted. Moments such as this may bring despair. We hope that from the despair will arise a deep sense of resiliency and a commitment to the nurturing of one’s self and community. Please take care.

Sincerely,

From: Office of the President

Dear OSU Community Members:

Since I last updated you immediately following the sudden events that destabilized the Pac-12 Conference one week ago, we are making progress in defining Oregon State University’s best paths forward. We continue to believe that preserving the Pac-12 is in the best interests of OSU student-athletes and the remaining universities, and so we are doing everything in our control to stabilize and rebuild the conference.

As a trusted broker and convenor, Oregon State is playing an important role in navigating both the future of the Pac-12 and the realignment among universities across the Western United States more broadly. We are ready for this challenge. We are prepared for multiple possible scenarios and continue to pursue every opportunity for OSU student-athletes and the university.

All this week, Athletic Director Scott Barnes and I have been meeting with OSU student-athletes, staff, faculty, alumni, and state and local government representatives to hear directly from them about how Friday’s events potentially impact students, our community, OSU and our state. I have heard feelings of frustration, anger and dismay. And I have heard your readiness to work together and to fight.

This week and next, we are rallying our supporters, speaking out, and lifting up the voices of student-athletes, alumni, fans, and the communities we serve. Their stories need to be part of the conversation about what is happening with conference realignment. We also call on all Beavers and supporters to show up for OSU student-athletes in Reser Stadium and across all our athletic venues. Continuing the momentum of last year’s success, which saw twelve Oregon State teams advance to the postseason, the nation’s eyes are upon us like never before, and we need all of Beaver Nation to rally with us.

On and off the field, our fight continues. As we work diligently to forge OSU Athletics’ path forward, I will continue to provide updates. Thank you for your continued support of OSU student-athletes, coaches, Athletics staff and the university.

Sincerely,

Jayathi Murthy, President

Custom text: 08/11/2023 : An update on Pac-12 developments

From: Office of the President

Dear OSU Community Members,

Many of you are seeing the recent news that University of Oregon and University of Washington have announced their decisions that they will leave the Pac-12, making the conference’s future less certain. This is a serious moment, and, given the longstanding traditions among Pac-12 teams, we all feel the loss.

We believe the preservation of the Pac-12 is in the best interests of all member universities, student-athletes and fans. Oregon State University also continues to explore options separate from those of the conference. We have been working vigorously behind the scenes to secure the best opportunity going forward. I will share more information with the university community as it becomes available.

Today, let us all remember that Oregon State University’s renowned athletics program has proven to be resilient over many years. We have rallied through difficult times, supported by the faith and enthusiasm of fans and also by the tremendous strength of our university and important rivalries here on the West Coast. In Oregon certainly, our more than 129-year history competing with and supporting one another in both athletics and academics will continue even as we move through change.

Our steadfast commitment is to the continued success and well-being of OSU’s extraordinary student-athletes across more than a dozen intercollegiate sports. As we chart our path forward, their holistic development and ability to balance their athletic and academic goals remain our top priority.

Thank you for your continued support for them and for all of Oregon State University.

Sincerely,

Jayathi Murthy, President

Custom text: 08/04/2023 : Today’s news regarding the Pac-12

From: Office of the President

Dear OSU Community Members,

I know that many of us are reflecting on yesterday’s news that the University of Colorado Board of Regents voted to approve CU’s plan to leave the Pac-12 Conference. I want to reassure you that CU’s decision does not alter the commitment that Oregon State University and other Pac-12 members have to one another and to our ongoing and meaningful collaborations not only in athletics, but also across our research and education missions. Our shared values, our passion for the highest level of intercollegiate athletic competition and our leadership roles as Tier 1 research universities unite us.

In today’s rapidly changing environment, the realignment we are experiencing in national intercollegiate athletics is not unexpected. Please know that we, along with other Pac-12 members, are proactively managing these changes, and our OSU team is working effectively to safeguard OSU’s interests while advocating for the continued strength and vitality of the Pac-12 Conference as a whole.

Yesterday, the Pac-12 Board of Directors met and reaffirmed our commitment to one another and our confidence in concluding our media rights deal and securing the conference’s continued success and growth. Immediately following the conclusion of our media rights deal, the conference will embrace expansion opportunities and bring new fans, markets, excitement and value to the Pac-12.

Today, I’m confident all Beavers are undaunted as we express our enthusiasm and pride in OSU student-athletes. They inspire us with their extraordinary achievements in competition, in the classroom and in the community. We can all look forward to an exciting year for Beaver Nation.

Sincerely,

Jayathi Murthy, President

From: Office of the President

Dear OSU Community Members,

Oregon State University joins with higher education institutions across the nation in its disappointment with two U.S. Supreme Court decisions issued today related to the consideration of race and ethnicity in college admissions.

The court’s rulings involve admissions practices at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina and may impact admission practices at many other universities and colleges nationally. In the days and weeks ahead, OSU leaders will be actively engaged to understand what direct impact, if any, these rulings may have within Oregon State University.

Even with this ruling, let me make clear: OSU will continue to admit every qualified Oregon student who applies. This is a foundational part of the university’s commitment to access, inclusivity and excellence. We also will continue to increase the diversity of the university’s student body by admitting talented and promising students from across the nation and the world.

While OSU does not consider an applicant’s race or ethnicity in making admission decisions, the university strongly affirms the importance of a diverse student body to advance the university’s teaching, research and engagement mission. Embracing diversity in everything we do makes the OSU community stronger. Diversity in enrollment contributes to the success of all students and their preparation for achievement in life, career, community and global engagement. Valuing the rich lived experiences and backgrounds of all students, employees, community members and university stakeholders enables prosperity for all communities in Oregon and in communities beyond this state.

As Oregon’s statewide land grant university, OSU remains resolutely committed to serving those who face systemic barriers to higher education, including students of color, low-income students, first-generation students, students from rural communities, veterans, adult learners and others. In doing so, we will continue to advance the university’s inclusive excellence mission.

In the weeks ahead, we will provide updates on the Supreme Court’s rulings and share information on this university website. And we will continue to work with partners across the state and country to ensure equal opportunity to higher education for all.

In the meantime, please learn more about the university’s commitment and efforts to advance diversity, equity and inclusion by reviewing the university’s core values, OSU’s current strategic plan, the university’s diversity strategic plan and the many resources available from the Office of Institutional Diversity.

Sincerely,

Jayathi Y. Murthy, President

From: Office of Institutional Diversity

Good afternoon,

The OSU community will commemorate Juneteenth this Monday, June 19. In recognition of the holiday, all university locations will be closed.

Juneteenth commemorates the date in 1865 when enslaved Africans in Galveston, Texas learned they were free, nearly three years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Over time, the holiday has grown to celebrate liberation, community resilience, family and culture within Black and African-American communities.

In 2021, OSU recognized Juneteenth as a paid holiday and, following decades of advocacy, the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was signed declaring Juneteenth a federal holiday. In 2022, Juneteenth became a holiday in the state of Oregon. The recognition of Juneteenth in Oregon is particularly poignant given the state’s history of exclusionary policies targeting Black communities.

At OSU, Juneteenth is an occasion to recognize and reflect on the incredible contributions of the Black community within the university and beyond:

  • On May 25, the President’s Commission on the Status of Black Faculty and Staff Affairs convened the second annual Summit on the State of Black Affairs at the OSU Portland Center where nearly 200 community members from across the state deliberated strategies to support and empower Black communities throughout Oregon.
  • On June 2, students from the Lonnie B. Harris Black Cultural Center on OSU’s Corvallis campus organized a Juneteenth Festival featuring performances, food, a yard show with the OSU chapters of the National Pan-Hellenic Council’s historically Black fraternities and sororities and a powerful speech by African Student Association members about the historical impacts of the slave trade on their home countries.
  • This Sunday, June 18, the Letitia Carson Legacy Project will host community members at its Juneteenth gathering starting at the Benton County Historical Society Museum in downtown Corvallis and then visiting her homesite to share portrayals of Letitia Carson’s tenacity and strength in the face of anti-Black policies in mid-1800s Oregon.

On Monday, please take time to learn more about Juneteenth, find opportunities for celebration across the state, and consider your own efforts to support Black leaders and communities within OSU and everywhere.

Sincerely, Scott A. Vignos, J.D.

  • Graduate stops at the edge of the stage and waits until their name is called to cross the stage.
  • Graduate moves toward President Murthy and receives their diploma from her.
  • Graduate continues crossing the stage and exits the other side of the stage.

OSU Community Members,

We write to wish all members of the Oregon State community a happy Pride Month and to celebrate the resilience and strength of the queer and trans community within the university and beyond.

Queer and trans communities have long been at the center of transformational change at OSU, including the founding of the Pride Center, SOL: LGBTQ+ Multicultural Support Network, the Hattie Redmond Women and Gender Center, the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies department and the Queer Studies program.

In many cases, these accomplishments are the result of OSU students and employees leading advocacy to create a better, more inclusive university. These stories and many others are archived within the OSU Queer Archives and continue to serve as a source of inspiration for current and future generations.

While Pride Month is a time of joy, it also provides an opportunity to reflect on the considerable work ahead, and the realities of policies and practices across the country that continually challenge the ability of queer and trans people to thrive.

In many states, we are witnessing the passage of laws limiting the ability of trans youth and adults to access healthcare, bans targeting books about queer and trans communities, and efforts to curtail the free expression rights of queer and trans people.

This environment is creating significant concern and anxiety among students and employees at OSU. To concerned community members: we understand the stress of the present climate and are working to offer support, provide access to accurate and timely information, and create opportunities for OSU community members to learn more and raise awareness. More information about these opportunities will be shared on the Office of Institutional Diversity website.

Important work is underway throughout the university. On the Corvallis campus this includes the hiring of OSU’s first two Coordinators of LGBTQ+ Student Mental Health and Wellness in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and creating access to gender affirming health care through Student Health Services and CAPS. Additionally, the Pride Center and Office of Institutional Diversity facilitate workshops to build capacity for supporting queer and trans students and employees, and University Human Resources has created tailored guidance to help queer and trans employees navigate benefits and resources.

More work is to come, including the creation of more gender-inclusive restroom facilities at OSU locations across the state, projects to make IT systems more responsive to gender diversity and enhancing efforts to gather accurate data so decisions are made with the unique needs of queer and trans community members in mind.

For OSU students in need of support, please contact the Pride CenterHattie Redmond Women and Gender Center or consult the many available resources within OSU. Employees may contact University Human Resources or the Office of Institutional Diversity.

As Pride Month continues, we encourage OSU community members to learn more and get involved. As with all efforts to advance equity, the work of creating and sustaining a university where queer and trans community members can thrive is not limited to just a few offices and people – this is all our work.

Queer and trans community members are essential to who we are as a university, and collectively we must ensure that Pride Month is just one of many opportunities to learn, strategize and act to make OSU a place that continually improves access, belonging and success for all.

Sincerely, Scott A. Vignos, Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer

Dan Larson, Vice Provost for Student Affairs

Heather Horn, Associate Vice President and Chief Human Resources Office

From: ASOSU

Dear OSU Corvallis students,

We are approaching one of the most exciting times of the year: Graduation and the Commencement Ceremony! I know you all are incredibly eager to participate in the final stages of your academic experience at Oregon State University.

With many accomplishments in life, there comes time for celebration. We are immensely proud of everything that you have accomplished during your time here at OSU and we want you to celebrate! This is the time to connect with new and old friends, family, and loved ones. Take a moment to reflect on the experiences you’ve shared at Oregon State, the highs and lows, and give yourself credit for all you have achieved.

We want to remind everyone that it is essential that we commemorate and celebrate responsibly and respectfully. We recognize that everyone is going to celebrate in different ways, but we can all do so in ways that contribute to our individual and community safety.

On Commencement Day, the Corvallis campus will operate with the same policies as every other day, including the prohibition of alcohol and other drugs on campus. Not only are we not allowed to bring these items onto campus, we simply do not need them. On that day, we want to be our best selves for our friends, families and for our fellow graduating Beavers.

Join us on Commencement Day to honor our colleagues and their accolades and be proud of what you have accomplished and who you have become.

Happy Graduation,

Matteo Paola

ASOSU President
