Dear OSU-Cascades students,

With finals just around the corner, it’s time to focus on YOU. By paying attention to some of your basic needs now, you’ll be ready to bring your best self to final exams and end-of-term projects.

Focus on nutrition, stay hydrated and get good sleep

It takes a little planning to be your best. Think of the foundational tier of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs—are you eating well, drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep? By focusing on ways to improve your nutrition and ensure deep sleep, you’re investing in yourself.

Be ready for some stress

Exams are your opportunity to demonstrate to yourself and to your professor what you have learned.  But exams are stressful, too, even when you are ready for them.  Our Student Wellness team has tips and resources to help, and here are some practical ways team members suggest caring for yourself:

  • Write down your goals. Why are you here? Why are you studying? Is it going to be okay if you don’t end up with that A? Bringing what you’re doing into perspective can help with motivation and stress.
  • Moderate caffeine use. Caffeine can increase cortisol, a stress hormone, in your body and increase overall anxiety.
  • Take a walk outside as a study break.
  • Put away your screens for periods – computers, phones and other devices. With so much of our lives online, experts say our brains need breaks.
  • Focus on a creative outlet when you have a few minutes. Doing what you love refreshes you.

If I or a member of my team can be of assistance please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Jane Reynolds
