Recent phishing attacks on OSU students, staff, and faculty have exploited older authentication methods, revealing vulnerabilities that must be urgently addressed. We have identified mobile and desktop applications that require updated Duo authentication protocols to secure these vulnerabilities.

To protect the OSU community and the university’s information, University Information and Technology (UIT) is implementing Duo security changes on Wednesday July 17th, 2024.

All ONID accounts will be required to use modern authentication methods for mobile applications and desktop applications identified as critical to improve OSU’s cybersecurity.

What do you need to do?
When this change goes into effect, you may be prompted to log in on your mobile device or computer to access applications such as Microsoft Teams or Outlook and reauthenticate with Duo. You may also be prompted to update an application to meet modern authentication requirements, most commonly your mobile device's email application. If you are using an older email application that does not support modern authentication, please contact the Service Desk or your college’s IT support team to move to a current and supported email tool.

Known issues
If you have Microsoft Authenticator installed on an iPhone, you may experience issues logging into programs after the mandatory modern authentication goes into effect. Most devices successfully log in after a few minutes. If you continue to experience issues, please refer to the  Duo MFA Update – Troubleshooting guide or contact the Service Desk for assistance at beav.es/help or 541-737-8787.

Next steps
Please continue reporting phishing attempts in Outlook using the Report Message feature.

We appreciate your patience during this process. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the safety and security of the OSU community.

Respectfully,

David McMorries, Chief Information Security Officer, Office of Information Security
