From: Office of the President

Dear OSU Community Members,

Like you, I am heartbroken following the senseless murder of 19 children and two teachers yesterday in an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

We grieve for those killed and harmed, for their families, for Uvalde residents, and the communities who will be forever impacted by this event.

There is something terribly wrong when a child cannot go to school and come home safely each day. This year alone, there have been more than three dozen shootings in K-12 schools, colleges and universities across the nation, along with dozens of cases of firearm violence and death at churches, grocery stores, and in communities and neighborhoods. Such violence should not happen anywhere, yet it happens daily.

As a university community, we must support each other while also continuing to critically and openly engage in discussing the issues that contribute to this violence. As a leading public research university, we must pursue research and generate evidence-based insights for decision makers to debate and enact public policies and provide programs to prevent these incidents and end this crisis.

If you have been impacted by the events in Uvalde, Buffalo, or other incidents of gun violence, please seek support. Your well-being matters. Students seeking support may access Counseling and Psychological Services. Employees seeking support may access Beyond Benefits.

While we are in sorrow today, let us join with others across Oregon and the nation to provide for an end to repeated violence.

Becky Johnson, Interim President
