Guidance for Faculty Regarding Winter 2020 Finals

Because we will administer most final exams using alternative methods such as Canvas, take home examinations, or alternate activities, there will be few exams held on campus. Any on-campus exams must use a social distancing model, and therefore we are working to provide spaces where the capacity allows for adequate social distancing.

If you are an instructor wishing to keep your scheduled in-person final, you will receive information from the Schedule Desk about the rearrangement.
If you plan to offer a take-home or online exam, please complete this survey as quickly as possible.

Q: What do I need to do to change my in-person final to an online final?

A: Inform your students of the change and inform the Schedule Desk via this survey. Make the final materials available for students via Canvas. For more information, please see the Keep Teaching site. 

Q: My final was originally scheduled for one room, but now my students are split among multiple rooms. To which room do I tell students to go?

A: You will need to decide how to split your students and direct them to the appropriate room. You will receive an approximate capacity for each room assignment.

Q: My final was originally scheduled for one room, but now my students are split among multiple rooms. What do I do about proctors for those rooms?

A: Please work with your department to find additional proctors. If this is not feasible, please contact the Schedule Desk.

Q: Can I change the location assigned for my final?

A: We cannot accommodate changes to the schedule due to the domino effect of changes. If there are extenuating circumstances, please alert the Schedule Desk.

Q: In what spaces will these finals be scheduled?

A: We will schedule in any available space where we can reasonably seat students. This may include gymnasiums, athletic facilities, conference rooms, et. al.

Q: How do I know the room capacity for the room(s) in which my final is scheduled?

A: Please consult your department schedulers, as they will know room capacity for most rooms. 

Q: What do I do if I have a student with Disability Access Services accommodation needs?

A: Please contact Disability Access Services, who will work with the Office of the Registrar on an appropriate location.

Q: When are final grades due?

A: Grades are due by 5:00pm PDT on March 23rd. This deadline remains critical to federal compliance and student aid awarding processes.

Q: I submitted the survey stating I would give an online final, but want to hold it in person instead. What do I need to do to change this?

A: Contact the Schedule Desk in the Office of the Registrar.

Q: Can I cancel my final?

A: This is a departmental decision; university expectations are that students complete all requirements of the course.
