Safety reminders and resources for the new academic year

OSU Community Members,

Welcome to the new academic year. We are excited to see so much activity and energy on Oregon State University’s Corvallis campus.

The safety of the OSU community is a top priority of the university and the Department of Public Safety. At OSU, public safety is a shared responsibility, and we ask for your collaboration.

Students, faculty and staff can contribute to their own and others’ safety by being aware of their surroundings and reporting suspicious behavior or the presence of unusual or suspicious items.

The Department of Public Safety is always available to help and respond to your needs. For non-emergency help, please call 541-737-3010. If it’s an emergency, call 541-737-7000 or 911. You may also visit the Department of Public Safety web page to learn more about the Department of Public Safety, and to find information about safety-related topics.

If you do report a matter of concern, please focus on describing the behavior when identifying the suspicious activity. Be prepared to describe “Who, what, when, where and why.” For example: Share who you saw. (And also share who else saw the incident you are reporting.) What did you see? When did you see it? Where did you see it? Why did it appear suspicious or unusual to you?

To help in reporting an item considered suspicious, evaluate if the item is hidden, obviously suspicious and something not typically seen or used within a location. If you see or discover a suspicious item, do not touch it, tamper with it or move it. Call 911 and report the item immediately.

Here are some additional free resources to help you this year:

·         OSU Assist provides mobile crisis response for mental health matters and other forms of distress. It can be reached via Public Safety at 541-737-3010.

·         Counseling and Psychological Services offers students mental health support.

·         ASOSU SafeRide is a service providing OSU students alternative transportation services around campus and within Corvallis and the surrounding area.

·         Guardian App, is a service that provides one-button emergency calling and the ability to create a Virtual Escort from your contacts.

·         Beyond Benefits Employee Assistance Program provides resources for OSU employees, including mental health support.

These and more resources can be found at our OSU Experience Student Resources web page.

To contribute to your safety and awareness, please verify your mobile number to receive text messages from OSU Alert, the university’s text and email alert service that provides time-sensitive information.  Students may verify their mobile phone number by logging in to Beaver Hub, https://beaverhub.oregonstate.edu/login, and under Resources clicking on 'View/Update Address and Phone'.  OSU only sends emergency text messages when an incident needs your immediate response so you can ensure you protect yourself from what is occurring.  Other than an annual test, we will not send routine messages via text.

Thank you for your help in contributing to safety within the OSU community.

Sincerely,

Shanon Anderson

Associate Vice President for Public Safety/Chief of Police

Custom text: 09/25/2023 : Important online resources for students

From: Office of the Dean of Students

Welcome back soon for another exciting and busy academic year at Oregon State University. I am writing to share a reminder regarding religious holidays and observances and to confirm that the university is committed to providing support for students whose religious observance may have an impact on classes, schedules and dietary needs.

We request that faculty work with all undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of learning modality, as outlined in OSU’s Religious Accommodation of Students Policy. It is incumbent on the student making the request to notify their faculty member or supervisor as soon as possible prior to the need for accommodation, although we recognize that holidays closely aligned with the start of a term may make that difficult. Students should work directly with their faculty member on these requests, and we ask that faculty provide reasonable accommodations to allow for the completion of any missed course deliverables. Faculty and staff are able to approve requests for religious accommodations without consultation, but must first contact the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access before denying a request.

Below we provide information regarding dining and food options available on the Corvallis campus and at OSU-Cascades.

If you have any questions, concerns or recommendations, please do not hesitate to directly contact the Office of the Dean of Students or the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access.

We wish you all a great start to fall term.

Kevin A. Dougherty, Ed.D., Senior Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs, Dean of Students, [email protected]

Custom text: 09/22/2023 : Fall 2023 Religious Holidays Community Information

From: Office of Information Security

Dear OSU Community,

Between 10pm and midnight this evening, Wednesday, September 20, the campus telephone system will be updated, causing a brief phone outage at the Corvallis and Bend campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center.

While the outage will be brief, expected to be less than 10 minutes, certain systems on campus will not function during the outage, including the Blue Light emergency phones and elevator emergency phones. During the outage, OSU Community members can call 9-1-1 using mobile devices.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Department of Public Safety at 541-737-3010 before 10pm this evening, or 541-737-7000 between 10pm and midnight.

Respectfully,

Shannon Anderson, Associate Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police

From: Office of the President

Dear OSU Community Members,

As I shared on Friday, Oregon State University and Washington State University initiated legal action to confirm the governance structure of the Pac-12 Conference, gain access to business information and protect the conference’s assets. Part of this action was a request for a temporary restraining order to prevent the Pac-12 commissioner and conference from permitting the departing institutions to take control of the conference.

Today the request for a temporary restraining order was granted in Whitman County Superior Court in Washington. The Court ordered the parties to confer on a schedule for the next hearing on the governance question. In the meantime, the conference must receive unanimous consent on any board matters.

I am pleased with today’s decision. As the two remaining Pac-12 members, Oregon State and Washington State must be able to chart a path forward for the Pac-12—not the members that have chosen to leave it. We are confident in the merits of our position and look forward to working in a collaborative manner with the conference and departing members on a productive path forward. OSU and WSU, along with Pac-12 staff, have important work to do to protect the 2023-2024 seasons for all 12 schools’ student-athletes and plan for our future.

As I have stated previously, we did not create or seek these circumstances. We remain firmly committed to stabilizing the Pac-12 as the first step to secure a future for OSU Athletics that serves the holistic health and well-being of student-athletes and their ability to compete at the highest level possible.

I greatly value and appreciate the OSU community’s continued support of the university and OSU’s talented student-athletes, coaches and Athletics staff. We will continue to provide updates, which you also can find at https://beav.es/TBs.

Sincerely,

Jayathi Y. Murthy, President

Custom text: 09/11/2023 : Pac-12 temporary restraining order granted

From: Office of the President

Dear OSU Community Members:

Today, together with Washington State University, we are taking a critical step to continue our ability to explore ways to preserve the legacy and future viability of the Pac-12 Conference. Ten members of the Pac-12 have given notice that they are withdrawing from the Conference. As the two remaining members, Oregon State and Washington State are left to find ways to carry on the Pac-12’s 108-year legacy.

We intend to steward the Pac-12’s assets and resources in the best interests of student-athletes, fans, our universities and the Conference itself. The future of the Pac-12 must be determined by its remaining members, not those who are departing for competing conferences.

This morning, Oregon State and Washington State initiated legal action to confirm the governance structure of the conference, gain access to business information, and protect the conference’s assets. The temporary restraining order we have requested seeks to prevent the Pac-12 Commissioner and Pac-12 Conference from permitting the departing institutions to take control. We must not be stopped or limited in our ability to continue explorations of continuing the Pac-12’s legacy. We intend to make reasonable business decisions in the interest of the conference going forward while continuing to seek collaboration and consultation with the departing universities on any ultimate financial decisions.

We did not create or seek these circumstances. As you know, we have been strong advocates for keeping the conference together and preserving the regional rivalries that have meant so much to so many people. Stabilizing the Pac-12 is the first step on our path as we secure a future for OSU Athletics that serves the holistic health and well-being of student-athletes and their ability to compete at the highest level possible. The road ahead will not be fast or easy. But we gain strength and determination with each step as we link arms with you and fight onward.

Thank you to all those who have contributed to the outpouring of support for the university and OSU student-athletes, coaches and staff in recent weeks. We will continue to provide you updates, which you can also find at https://beav.es/TBs.
