March 26, 2019: Important Information about Graduation at OSU

Hello! We’re reaching out to you because our records show that you are likely graduating within the next year (or so). Congratulations on getting close! We also want to remind you that undergraduate students no longer apply to graduate at OSU.

Here is what we need you to do:

  • Check your MyDegrees to make sure it is up-to-date with your accurate degree program, including all major(s)/minor(s)/option(s)/certificate(s).
  • If you have transfer credits that you need applied, make sure to have your transcripts sent to the OSU Office of Admissions (or OSU-Cascades Enrollment Services for Cascades students) and let your academic advisor know, as they may need to take an additional step to move you to graduation candidacy. Note: Transcripts are automatically sent by the community colleges for DPP students – no need to request those transcripts but still let your advisor know that transfer credit is coming.
  • Meet with your academic advisor if you have any substitutions and/or exceptions that need to be applied. If you are unsure of this or are concerned about your MyDegrees progress, please schedule an appointment to talk with your academic advisor.
  • If you are completing course requirements next term but need to delay graduation due to your participation in experiential learning activities (e.g., internship, study abroad), please contact your academic advisor. Unless you have outstanding requirements for your declared degree program or are participating in experiential learning activities that delay graduation, we will advance you to graduation in the term in which you enroll in your final courses.
  • If you need to add a final course or credits, ensure you do so by the published deadlines.

If you are graduating this coming term, you should expect to hear from the Degree Completion Team by April 19th. If you expect to graduate this upcoming term, and do not hear from graduation@oregonstate.edu by this date, please contact your academic advisor.

Communication to students in pilot colleges with 135+ credits, 90% complete in MyDegrees:

Hello! We reached out to you a few weeks ago to let you know that you are close to completing your degree requirements and, because of that and the college in which you are a student, you will be a part of our institutional awarding pilot project.

Here’s what we need you to do:

  • Check your MyDegrees to make sure it is up-to-date with your accurate degree program, including all major(s)/minor(s)/option(s).
  • If you have transfer credits you need applied, make sure you have had your transcripts sent to the OSU Office of Admissions and let your academic advisor know, as you may need to take an additional step to move to graduation candidacy.
  • Meet with your academic advisor if you have any substitutions and/or exceptions that need to be applied. If you are unsure of this or see some issues with your MyDegrees progress, please schedule an appointment to talk with your academic advisor. Unless you have outstanding requirements for your declared degree program, we will advance you to graduation in the term in which you enroll in your final courses.
  • If you need to add a final course, ensure you add it by the add deadline for the course.

Again, this is a pilot project that includes only those students in College of Liberal Arts, College of Public Health and Human Sciences, and College of Earth, Oceanic, and Atmospheric Sciences who we have determined are close to completing degree requirements. You may know people in other colleges than the aforementioned pilot colleges; they still need to apply to graduate. You, however, do not need to apply.

Communication to students in pilot colleges (CLA, CEOAS, CPHHS) with 135+ credits earned and 80%+ complete in MyDegrees:

Hello! We are reaching out to you because you are close to completing your degree requirements within the next few terms. Congratulations! This term, the Office of the Registrar is working with the (Pilot College) to begin what we call institutional awarding of degrees.

How does this affect me?

What this means is that instead of asking you or other students in your college to apply for graduation, as we normally do, we will prepare to award you your degree automatically, upon successfully completing all of your degree program requirements.

What do I need to do?

To do this, we need you to take care of any outstanding coursework or other requirements needed to complete your major(s), minor(s) (if one/some are declared), and option (if applicable). If you’re unsure about this, please meet with your academic advisor(s).

Please note: Before this becomes the normal practice of OSU, we are trying out this process with a few colleges. What that means is that your friends who are not in your college may still need to apply for graduation. You, however, do not need to apply for graduation.

What if I already applied to graduate for this term?

If you already applied to graduate, you do not need to do any further action. We will evaluate your program of study as we normally would. However, if you have not applied to graduate this term, you do not need to apply. Once we review your requirements, we will automatically advance you to graduation unless you change your program of study. If you have questions or concerns about this, please get in contact with your academic advisor.

What if I need to delay my graduation term for some reason?

If that is the case, you will need to meet with your academic advisor to discuss this further.
